5 spots that even Salzburg residents don't (always) know
In a city as popular with tourists as Salzburg, it is difficult to find places where whole tour groups are not just trying to take a souvenir photo. But they do exist - here are 5 spots that not even all Salzburg residents know about.
Wine on the Mönchsberg
On the initiative of a Salzburg scout group and a winemaker, wine is grown on the Salzburg city mountain Mönchsberg. The typical Frühroter Veltliner can even be tasted here on selected days, not many people know about the spot - although the Mönchsberg with the Hohensalzburg Fortress and the Museum of Modern Art is certainly a tourist magnet. Simply check the opening times, hike up the mountain (or take the Mönchsberg elevator or the fortress train up) and enjoy the wine. If the winery is not open, we recommend the nearby buffet or the Stadtalm, a rustic inn with a sensational view.

Flamingos in Nonntal
On the city side of Hohensalzburg Fortress: overtourism. On the Nonntal side of the castle: undertourism. The districts of Leopoldskron and Nonntal have hardly any tourist spots and that's a good thing: There is a small nature reserve here with various ponds and one of them is even home to flamingos. There are also various other birds and animals. You only see tourists here if you are on your way to Leopoldskron Castle, where part of the legendary film Sound of Music was filmed, which Americans in particular love.

Eating at the weekly market
There is a lot of agriculture in the Salzburg region, which is the best conditions for a weekly market. The largest and most well-known is called "Schranne" and yes, it is the Schranne or in the dialect d'Schronna. Raffaela Wendl: "At the Hotel Andrä you live in the front row with your feet free and can watch the market hustle and bustle as soon as you get up. Go and discover the market in front of the Andräkirche: whether you want to buy a good piece of pastry, cake or Danish pastry for breakfast or culinary souvenirs to take home. I also strongly recommend planning lunch there on market day. Various carts stop in front of the Andräkirche church, where you can get everything from fried chicken to fish soup. From very typical Austrian food to fine dining! I like the fact that people from all walks of life mingle here at lunchtime.”

Sunset on the Gaisberg
The Gaisberg is unmistakable: a transmitter station sits at its peak and you can take the bus there. A ticket for the SVV is enough, and after around 30 minutes the city of Salzburg is at your feet. The spot is of course also known to all Salzburg residents, and the fact that at sunset at any time of year the beautiful light provides the backdrop for spectacularly beautiful Salzburg photos and videos is also well known. But: Unfortunately, far too few Salzburg residents take the bus up. "My tip: surprise your fellow travelers with the trip up the Gaisberg. Simply stroll to the Mirabell stop, get on the bus and don't say anything for as long as possible. All people who come from flat areas will be particularly impressed." Families also love the trip, and for children the paragliders, which take off right next to the final bus station, are a real adventure. And: In two inns on the Gaisbergspitz and one further down, you can eat well or stop for a snack, the Austrian snack.

Chamois on the city mountain
Helene Fischer lives here, Wolfgang Porsche will soon and also: chamois. Yes, you read that correctly, the alpine ungulates are also native to the middle of the city of Salzburg - and they live in the wild, not in an enclosure. The Kapuzinerberg is their territory and anyone who leaves the steep climb up Linzergasse behind them will find themselves in an urban oasis. Hiking, enjoying the view, challenging runs or trail running, forest bathing, you name it: the Kapuzinerberg will amaze you on your Salzburg vacation. A dense, intact forest high above the city of Mozart - you can hardly find that in any other city. Pro tip: Take water and provisions with you if you want to spend a longer time at Kapuzinerberg, because unlike on the other city mountains, there is no restaurant here.
